Being able to remain still. Photography as a research practice

Description

I would be a plant/ even a weed,/ a vine, /better would be an olive tree,/ maybe a pomegranate./ Being able to remain still/ and motionless.

This poem by the artist Costantino Nivola was the starting point for Valeria Cherchi, Paolo Ciregia and Vittorio Mortarotti, three of the most significant exponents of emerging Italian photography, involved in the project Poter restare fermo, commissioned by the Nivola Museum in Orani, curated by Antonella Camarda and Giangavino Pazzola and winner of the Bando Strategia Fotografia 2020.

The meeting is dedicated to the book that collects the outcomes of their residency and research in Sardinia: the island has become a metaphor for a universal condition.  In the dynamics between crisis and transformation, stasis has proved to be inescapable and necessary, a dimension capable of generating ecological approaches and practices. We discuss this with co-curator Antonella Camarda, photographer Vittorio Mortarotti and with two of the authors of the essays in the catalog: Giuliana Altea, who reconstructed the path of Costantino Nivola, addressing the themes of exile and community, and Nicoletta Leonardi, who analyzed the Mezzogiorno in the work of Mario Cresci, on the transition from folklore to history.

Speakers: GIULIANA ALTEA (Professor of Contemporary Art History, University of Sassari; President of the Fondazione Nivola), ANTONELLA CAMARDA (Curator, Assistant Professor in Museum Studies and History of Artistic Critique and Conservation, former director of the Museo Nivola, Orani) NICOLETTA LEONARDI, (Professor of Art History and Photographic History at Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Milan) and VITTORIO MORTAROTTI (Photographer and film-maker)
